Bile helps in the digestion, breaks fat into fatty acids. It is stored and released by the gallbladder. Gallstones usually form in the gallbladder. Gallstones treatment options are medication, surgical removal of the stone or sometimes gallbladder itself.

If the symptoms indicate a gallstone problem, then the doctor might first examine the patient’s skin for jaundice and the abdomen would be checked for tenderness. An obstruction can be traced out by a blood test.

As other digestive issues such as duct infection may also produce similar symptoms to those of a gallstone attack, the doctor might advise the patient to other tests to check out whether gallstone is the real fact behind the problem.

Mostly, gallstones treatment is considered as necessary based on the symptoms. Despite various conventional treatments, surgical removal of the gallbladder is the widely used.

While deciding the course of treatment for symptomatic gallstones, doctors usually choose one from the three main treatment options: watchful waiting, nonsurgical therapy and surgical removal of the gallbladder.

Gallbladder stone treatments

Gallbladder removal is recommended when it causes a high discomfort. This procedure is called Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy. The smaller incisions in the laparoscopic surgery help the patient to recover faster than the conventional method. When the gallstones are found in the common bile duct, the laparoscopic surgery is performed to remove the gallbladder. In rare cases, there were some people found with diarrhea and abdominal pain after the surgery.

If a patient does not want to go for a surgery, there are many non-surgical methods to destroy the stones. In shock wave therapy, high-frequency sound waves are used to fragment the gallstones. After this procedure, bile salt is administered to the patient to dissolve small pieces. It is a rarely used therapy. The gallstones formed from cholesterol and not from bile pigments can be dissolved with a bile salt.

In some cases, the stone dissolves itself or becomes dislodged and remains silent. As the problem is solved by itself without any medical intervention, doctors may handle wait and watch approach for such patients.
